Palo Alto Next-Generation Firewall: The Firewall That Sees Applications, Users and Content
2 November 2026

Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Firewall is a next-generation firewall platform that evaluates network traffic not by port and protocol number, but by which application is used, by which user, and with what content. In a world where most applications flow through the same web ports and most traffic is encrypted, a rule base that looks only at ports does not really know what it is allowing.
Core Technologies
App-ID: Classifies traffic at the application level regardless of the port it uses, so policy is written as "allow this application for this function" instead of "allow 443".
User-ID: Ties rules to users and groups rather than IP addresses, so the same policy applies whichever device or location a user connects from.
SSL/TLS inspection: Decrypts encrypted traffic to reveal threats and data leaks inside it, so encryption stops being a hiding place for attackers.
Cloud-Delivered Security Services
The firewall works together with Palo Alto's cloud-delivered services: Advanced Threat Prevention, which stops known and unknown attacks inline; Advanced URL Filtering, which blocks malicious and phishing sites; Advanced WildFire, which analyses unknown files; Advanced DNS Security, which cuts off DNS-based attacks; plus Enterprise DLP and IoT Security. Palo Alto states that it was the first vendor to bring inline deep learning to the firewall and that new signatures reach every internet-connected device within seconds.
A Form Factor for Every Environment
The same security approach extends across environments: hardware-based PA-Series (such as the PA-400, PA-1400 and PA-5450 series) for data centres and branches, VM-Series for private and public clouds, container-based CN-Series for Kubernetes, and Cloud NGFW, managed by Palo Alto on AWS. All devices can be managed individually or centrally with Panorama and Strata Cloud Manager, whose AIOps capabilities help predict device health issues before they occur.
Benefits for Organisations
Application and user visibility lets broad network permissions give way to narrow rules written around business needs. Bringing threat prevention, URL filtering and DNS security into a single policy structure reduces the overhead of managing separate products. Because the data centre, branches and cloud are protected by the same rules, segmentation stays consistent and an attacker's room for lateral movement shrinks.
