Prisma SD-WAN is a cloud-managed, next-generation software-defined wide area network solution that dynamically manages branch connectivity according to application performance and business policy. Most branch traffic now goes to SaaS applications and the cloud rather than the data centre; the classic WAN architecture that hauls all traffic to headquarters over expensive private lines no longer fits that reality.

App-Defined SD-WAN

Prisma SD-WAN makes routing decisions based on applications rather than packets. With what Palo Alto calls the App-Defined SLA Framework and App-Defined Fabric, a performance target is defined for each application; MPLS, broadband and mobile links are used together, and critical applications are automatically steered over the best path at that moment. When a link degrades, traffic moves to another without users noticing.

ION Devices and Fast Rollout

Branches use ION (Instant-On Network) devices; available as hardware or software, they bring diverse WAN link types and cloud-delivered security together in a single point. Palo Alto also offers a virtual edge option on Dell PowerEdge XR4000. A new branch can connect to the cloud security service edge (SSE) with a single click, so branch openings take days rather than weeks.

Experience Monitoring and Troubleshooting

Built-in Autonomous Digital Experience Management (ADEM) monitors the user experience end to end; real-time root cause analysis reveals whether slowness comes from the branch link, the internet service provider or the application itself, shortening time to resolution. For its context-aware Application Acceleration, Palo Alto states up to a 5x improvement in application performance.

Security and SASE

Prisma SD-WAN applies granular segmentation policies inside the branch with visibility into users, applications and devices, including IoT. Integrated with Prisma Access, it unites networking and security in a single SASE architecture: branch connectivity and cloud security are managed with the same policies, from the same place.

Benefits for Organisations

Steering critical applications over the best path improves the user experience and branch continuity. Reliance on expensive private lines falls, new branches come online quickly, and central visibility reduces trouble tickets and operational overhead.
